Brown Bull
This piece forms part of the critically acclaimed exhibition and publication ‘Laoch na Laochra’ by Dara Vallely and Réamonn Ó’Ciaráin. ‘Laoch na Laochra’ deals with the ancient stories from the ‘Táin Bó Cuailgne’ or Ulster Cycle of stories and its central archetypal hero, Cúchulainn.
This artwork depicts an image of the Brown Bull of Cooley, the Donn Cuailgne. The stories of Cúchulainn and the Brown Bull of Cooley are over a thousand years old and still dominate the mythical landscape of Ireland. Magic, romance, betrayal and violence mark every twist and turn of these heroic stories, as Queen Méabh’s armies steal the Brown Bull and Cúchulainn springs into action to defend his native Ulster.
